Finishing a great book to learn it is the only one of it’s kind if a special kind of heartbreak. These steamy paranormal book series will keep you turning the page with book after book of wonderfully romantic adventures.

Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs

Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series is very well known within the community, and a #1 New York TImes bestselling series to boot. As of the writing of this article, there are 11 books in the series. The series broke out in 2006 after Moon Called was published. Moon Called is easily the most popular book in the series. That said, many readers go onto read the rest of the series after getting their first taste of these great werewolf romance books.

Throughout this urban fantasy, the reader is exposed to a variety of different creatures; from gremlins to vampires. Not to mention Mercy herself is a coyote shapeshifter. If you’re looking for a female lead that needs everything done for her, keep looking. Mercy has a strong independance about her that shines through throughout the entire series. 


The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

The Mortal Instruments series is a young adult urban fantasy romance that revolves around female protagonists. Clary Fray, main protagonist in this series, is quickly thrown into the world of supernatural as she witnesses a murder that she can’t explain. She quickly becomes ensnared in this new world and the newly introduced “Shadowhunters.”

Surfacing in 2007 with the crowd favorite City of Bones, Clare went on to release a new book in the series every 1-2 years. This series has six books in it and ended in 2014. There is an overwhelmingly large fan base backing these novels, to the point they came out with a film adaptation. The film wasn’t as brilliant of a success, and no further films have been released. If you don’t like roller coasters, pass on this one!


Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward

J.R. weaves a great story throughout these books by diving into the backgrounds of the individual characters & making it all seem real. This paranormal romance revolves around the Black Dagger Brotherhood - which are a group of warrior vampires. The Brotherhood are at a constant battle with the Lessers throughout this series.

There are 16 books out currently, and more are expected to be released. Dark Lover, which was released in 2015, kicks off the story by introducing the six members of the brotherhood and wasting no time getting to the action & romance. As the stories progress, the world only continues to build & at the end you’ll be left wanting more. If you're looking for vampire romance books for adults, this is the next series you need to pick up.


Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh

The Psy-Changeling series is a hot shifter romance that spans wolves, falcons, bears & leopards. The paranormal romance series begins in 2006, Singh has been quickly releasing books since. 17 books currently exist in the series, with more expected to come.

This world is set in the future, and follows three distinct beings: Psy, humans and Changelings. Changelings are, not surprisingly, the shifters. Psy are similar to humans, except they have supernatural powers. And of course, the humans are well, human.


The Vampire Chronicles series by Anne Rice

The Vampire Chronicles is a paranormal romance series that has been around for over 30 years - and is still coming out with the odd new book. This series has 10 books with an eleventh expected October 2018. The first book in the series, Interview with the Vampire dates back to 1976. The Vampire Chronicles can be described more as gothic literature, as opposed to young adult fiction which has become exceedingly popular in the vampire world. There have been many film & TV adaptations - definitely check them out!

Something that makes The Vampire Chronicles unique is Rice’s ability to create a paranormal world with its own terminology. There is no shortage of steamy romance & adventure in these books. If you love vampires, but don’t want vampires that sparkle, this is the series for you. 


Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole

Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series is wonderful. The series aside, this #1 New York Times bestselling author is a pillar in the romance literary scene; and Immortals After Dark is well known in the paranormal world. If you want a steamy read with Alpha heroes, this series is for you.

Immortals After Dark is centred around a world of vampires and delivers on not just romance, but also action and comedy. The books take you on a journey, and you will re-visit certain events from a different perspective as you go through each book. This series is perfect for those of us that become depressed after learning there’s a only a few books in a series. This one’ll keep you busy!


Night Prince series by Jeanie Frost

Night Price is an urban romance fantasy series and follows Vlad of the Night Huntress series, as well as the heroine Leila, who is a new character. This series revolves around vampires and has a strong alpha presence in it. Leila is literally electrified, keeping something as simple as touching quite the kerfuffle. Vlad Tepesh is a vampire & Leila’s mate.

This series started in 2012 with Once Burned, and ended in 2017 with the fourth and final installment Into the Fire. If you love an action packed read but also crave hot & steamy, Night Price will give you what you’re looking for. You can read Night Price without reading the Night Huntress series first.
